PROJECT

Kick off of the project ‘Disaster Risk Reduction Practice Research and Capacity Building Support to ECOWAS’

In the end of September of 2018, the consortium responsible for implementation of the World Bank funded project met in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. The consortium, under the leadership of WASCAL (West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use), implements this project until the end of 2019 in close cooperation with the 15 member countries of ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States).

This assignment aims to reduce the differences in disaster risk management (DRM) capacity between ECOWAS states and increase ECOWAS DRM capacity in general by developing a shared disaster forecasting and early warning mechanism while strengthening regional education in the field of DRM.  In addition to HKV, consortium members include WRI (Ghana), FUTA (Nigeria) and UNITAR (Switzerland). HKV’s key task is the development of an Early Warning System for West Africa.
