PROJECT

Yangon Plastic Cleanup

A hydrodynamic modelling study was carried out to explore possibilities of collecting floating waste around the waters of Yangon (Myanmar). Particular attention was given to the potential solution that is provided by the InterceptorTM system as developed by The Ocean Cleanup. It is concluded that the system is a viable solution for Yangon. Two suitable locations were identified for possible implementation with one clear preferred location along the southern bank of Pazundaung Creek near downtown Yangon. For this location, it is estimated that the system could collect more than a million kg of waste per year.

We conducted the hydrodynamic modelling study, collaborated with The Ocean Cleanup on defining hydrodynamic criteria for implementation of their waste collecting system, and with help from the local Arcadis office in Yangon we incorporated new field observation to advise on suitable locations for intercepting waste around Yangon.
