‘Our Flood Mural’ has been selected for the pilot phase of the Living with Floods challenge

HKV and IHE Delft have has been selected for the pilot phase of the Living with Floods challenge with the idea ‘Our Flood Mural’. This is a challenge of the Dutch Coalition of Humanitarian Innovation (DCHI) and The Netherlands Red Cross (NLRC). The goal of this open innovation challenge is to find solutions that help vulnerable communities reduce their risks of floods. In the pilot phase, the two selected solutions will be implemented in an area near the city of Beira in Mozambique.

Our proposed idea aims to improve location-specific flood awareness through a combination of traditional and modern communication techniques. A mural painting is at the core of the concept, which will show what could be done before, during or after floods. The mural provides information and advice and also refers to additional information channels, such as social media, downloadable apps, SMS services or radio stations. The local population will be closely involved in the design and realization process of the mural.

In the next months we will search (local) partners to set up a pilot in Mozambique. Watch the video below to learn more about the challenge and our proposed solution.
